Gary Arthur Akins was born on July 31, 1954, in Bridgeton, NJ. He grew up on Greentop in Lincoln, DE, where he was given the nickname “Smoke.” He passed away peacefully in his home on December 11, 2022.

Gary attended Milford School District and loved to play basketball. Gary enjoyed reading novels and watching cowboys and karate movies. He loved calling his family to check up on everybody. He served in the US Navy for a short period of time. Gary loved to cook! He was a chef at Hollywood Diner, and Sail Loft in Milford, DE. He also worked at the Southern Grill as a dishwasher in Ellendale, DE.

 

Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Fannie Akins of Lincoln, DE; bothers, Daniel Akins Jr., and Willard “Cal” Akins; and sister, Bobbie Jean “Nanny” Akins.

 

Gary is survived by: two brothers, Lamont Akins (Venus) of Tampa, FL, and Jeffrey Akins (Marneeta) of Harrington, DE; three sisters, Sallie Mae Akins of Lincoln, DE, Charlotte Akins-Pierre of Milford, DE, and Atleta “Tina” Akins of Berlin, MD; and a host of nieces and nephews who he genuinely loved.
