

Life Story
Hattie M. Smith-Shealy, age sixty-six, previously a long-time resident of Yonkers, New York, died peacefully at her and her husband’s home in Dover, Delaware, on January 20, 2023. Hattie and her surviving spouse, Thomas Roosevelt Shealy (Sonny), having wed in 1987, were married for thirty-six years. A daughter of the late John H. Smith and Ann Marie Smith Columbus, Hattie was born on August 29, 1956, in Beaufort, North Carolina. The family relocated to Yonkers, New York, where she grew up and attended Yonkers public schools. She had an interest in Pace Business School and fulfilled that interest when she graduated from Pace Business School in 1982. Thereafter, Hattie began her career at Travelers Life Insurance Company. In her latter years, she switched careers and worked at Park Gardens Rehabilitation & Nursing where she remained until her retirement. After she reached retirement, Hattie relocated to Dover, Delaware, in order to relax and take it easy for the remainder of her life. She had a long and varied life, and those who knew her will mourn her deeply.

Hattie is predeceased in death by her daughter, KaMeshia Shealy; parents, John H. Smith and Ann Marie Smith Columbus; and two siblings, Alma May Whitney and John H. Smith Jr. (Hank).
Hattie is survived by: her spouse, Thomas Roosevelt Shealy; three siblings, Lola D. Smith Todman, Lenell Wilson Kenneth, and Pastor Joseph Smith; son, Trejol Smith; stepchildren, Thomas, Gregory, Charles, Phillip, “Lil Sonny,” Tawanda, Juanquin, and Deshorn; five grandchildren, Taquan Smith, Tyreke Stanley, Keondre Knight, Treeyana Rouse, and TreyShawn Shealy; and a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
