Life Story
Dorothy Elizabeth Mitchell Barnes affectionately known as "Mom," "Dottie," "Darth," "Flip," and "Granny," received her wings on September, 12, 2023 at Loftland Center in Seaford, DE.
Dorothy was born on November 6, 1933 in Delmar, DE, from the union of father, Alfred Clyde Mitchell and mother, Flossie Adaline Allen-Mitchell. Dorothy attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar Elementary School. She graduated from W.C. Jason High School in Georgetown, DE.
Dorothy began her working career at Swift Chicken Plant and remained there for twenty-five years. During her time working for Swift she received a certificate for best trimmer. Swift later became Perdue Farms where she continued working for an additional twenty-five years. After working a total of 50 years at the chicken plant, she decided to retire to enjoy time with family. She loved watching Cowboy Westerns and listening to music on Saturdays and Sundays, and she couldn't wait for her Sunday call from the Jersey girls. Dorothy also enjoyed her niece and cousins bringing her dinners on Sundays, and she loved when her grandchildren and their families came to visit; she knew they would take her out to dinner somewhere. During summer seasons, they would all come visit and take her to Old Mill Crab House (Granny loved her some seafood).
Dorothy met the love of her life, Mr. Ira E. Barnes Sr. "Pops", and from their union they had a son, Ira E. Barnes Jr.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her father and mother; two great grandchildren, William Ballard lll and Terry Harris Jr.; a host of sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and some cousins.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Theresa B. Johnson of Dover, DE; her son, Ira Barnes Jr. of Philadelphia, PA; six grandchildren, Tonja Ballard, Leslie Johnson (Anthony), Tana'e Johnson, Shequita Johnson, all of Dover, DE, Bianca Barnes and Avion Williams, both of Philadelphia, PA; one brother, Alfred Mitchell of Newark, NJ; two sisters, Naomi Johnson of Burlington, NJ, and Guelda Tull (Robert) of Willingboro, NJ; 13 great grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins.
