LIFE STORY
Maxine Lynette Slay, 74, of Lincoln, Delaware, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023, in Columbia, South Carolina surrounded by loved ones. Maxine was born in Cuthbert, Georgia, to the late Clinton and Sarah Mae Lang Odums. She was a devoted and caring mother, auntie, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to all who knew her.
Maxine was affectionately known as "MACKY BOY," "MOMMA MAX," and "MOMMA.” She enjoyed reading her Bible, praying, sewing, gardening, cooking, and spending time laughing with friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for speaking her mind and being direct in a loving way. Her charismatic personality warmed the hearts of many who came to love her dearly.
After graduating from Robinson Jenkins Ellerson High School in Starke, Florida, Maxine relocated to Delaware where she was joined in matrimony to Genorval Slay. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Milford Memorial Hospital in Milford, DE, and later for the Social Security Administration in Georgetown, DE.
For many years, Sister Maxine served as a member of the Pentecostal Church of God of Lincoln, Inc. In 2017, she joined the Community Pentecostal Church of God in Houston, DE, where she was baptized in August 2017 and ordained as a church Mother on April 24, 2022. She could often be heard passionately shouting out in agreement when her pastor preached the Word of God. Sister Maxine was a faithful member and was willing to help in any capacity. Her giving nature allowed her to connect with many in the community, where her presence was always welcomed. The love she shared will continue to live in our hearts and memories. During this time we will be encouraged by what she so often said, “I don't know what later on or tomorrow will bring, but I will praise him right now.”
She was preceded in death by her son Avery Odums and two grandchildren.
Sister Maxine leaves to cherish her memory her children Quinton Odums Sr., Alexander Letthand Sr. (Tylissa), and Nicole Letthand; nephew, Rodney Odums, sister, Gladys Booker; grandchildren, Quintin Odums, Jr., Christopher Odums, Avery D. Odums Jr., Shelby Letthand, Shellisha Letthand, Shane Letthand Sr. (Amber), Ivory Odums, Alyssa "Muffin" Letthand, Alexander Letthand Jr., and Nicholas Letthand, six great-grandchildren; beloved friends, Katherine Johnson, Mary Alexander, Denise Harper and children, Deborah Thomas and family, and Mr. Ricky and Shirley Rickards, and a host of cousins, godchildren, and friends.
